Council to join wider region in marking anniversary
Dudley Council is joining organisations across the region to mark 50 years since the creation of the West Midlands county.
The civic flag will be raised at Dudley Council House, with the building to also be lit in blue and green, from today (Thursday 28 March) until Tuesday 2 April to celebrate the special anniversary.
Dudley metropolitan borough was established in 1974 as part of the changes, covering the combined area of the old county borough of Dudley plus the municipal boroughs of Halesowen and Stourbridge.
People who live and work in the borough are also being invited to share pictures of the borough over the last fifty years through Dudley Council’s social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram and X (formally Twitter) using #Dudley50.
Dudley Council is supporting the West Midlands Lieutenancy, which is running its ‘50forWM50 project’. The project is celebrating volunteering in the region by telling volunteer stories and demonstrating the specialness of the West Midlands and its people.
Kevin O’Keefe, chief executive of Dudley Council, said:
“It is a huge honour to mark the start of the 50th year of the West Midlands county and Dudley metropolitan borough Council.
“The West Midlands Lieutenancy is celebrating the huge role volunteers have played in the life of the region, the impact they have made, and the inspiration they bring.
“As well as flying the civic coat of arms and lighting up the council house, we are inviting people to share photographs of the borough from the last 50 years including buildings, events, high streets and communities.”
